What is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic Dance is a gathering centered on a journey through music and movement - a space for self-exploration and self-expression, free from judgement and free from social expectations.

It invites you to bring your attention inside, release any pressure to perform, and simply be as you are. The music is there to activate and resonate with different parts of your being, and you're invited to let those parts move. The journey supports integration, the circulation of prana, and healing.

No steps to learn and no experience needed - just come as you are.

The shape of the day

How a Sunday flows

Ecstatic Dance Church is held as a ceremony, from the opening circle to the closing circle.

10:30am

Arrive

Doors open. Settle in, find your space in the shala, and land in your body.

11 am

Opening circle

We gather, set the container, and begin together. From here, the floor holds silence.

The journey

The dance

A live DJ set that moves from stillness to peak and back again. Follow the music wherever it takes you.

1 pm

Closing circle

We come back together to integrate. Linger after if you like - the space closes around 3:30-4pm.

1:30 pm

Community lunch

Come together over a big pay-by-weight buffet, with desserts and drinks. Share a table, connect, and perhaps head to the river together afterward.

Before you come

Ecstatic Church Agreements

We ask everyone to join the space under these agreements. They're what keep it safe, clean and sacred for all of us.

Honoring the ceremony
  • No talking. Ecstatic dance is a ceremony held through movement and sound, stillness and silence. From the opening circle to the closing circle we refrain from verbal communication in the temple, around it, and on the plaza in front. For a conversation, walk away to the fire circle or the lounge - a few steps outside the shala is not far enough.
  • Consensual engagement. Look for consent when engaging with anyone on the dance floor. Honor yourself and show a Namaste hand sign whenever you need space.
  • Come sober. No drugs, plant medicines, alcohol or other psychoactive substances before or during the dance, or during your time at Awake.
  • No photos or videos without explicit consent from the participants.
Cleanliness

We keep the space clean in honor of the space and everyone in it. Arrive reasonably clean, leave trash and compost only in the bins (in the Cora), and keep a clear mind by staying sober. If you sweat a lot, please wear a top - and if the floor gets wet anyway, help us mop it.

Respect the time container

We ask all Ecstatic Church participants to leave the space by a set time - usually 3:30-4pm, sometimes adjusted for other activities and the needs of the Awake community. Please be mindful to honor it.

No dogs

Please don't bring dogs to Awake. If you absolutely must, keep your dog tied near the entrance gate of the property until you leave.

Personal food

Please don't eat your own food at Café Cora, its lounge, or in and around the Surya Shala and its front plaza. You're welcome to enjoy it elsewhere on Awake grounds in nature, as long as you take all your trash with you.

Come as you are. Leave the week at the door. See you on the floor this Sunday.
